Review: Domäne Wachau Terraces 2011 Grüner Veltliner

I’m a big fan of Austrian Grüner Veltliner and this Domäne Wachau Terraces 2011 is a great example at a keen price. If you’re new to Grüner Veltliner I would definitely recommend it as a good introduction to the variety.

Domane Wachau TerracesThis one is grown on Domäne Wachau’s stunningly beautiful steep terraces overlooking the river Danube. The result is a wine that is exceptionally clean, crisp and dry with good acidity. There’s nice hints of citrus and green apples on the palette, but it’s the stoney minerality that I love so much. The image it conjured up for me was the smell of the rocks of the vineyard terraces after it’s rained. It’s also got a subtle floral note to it too and a hint of white pepper. Grüner Veltliners are great food wines – We gave this one a battering with a firey curry and it more than stood up to it. It would make a great summery aperitif too. Exclusively available at Waitrose for just under £9.
